- Collagen
If you’re not drinking bone-broth or taking Collagen then start now!
Collagen is a protein and the most abundant protein in the body. It is found in connective tissue and bones and it gives our skin it’s elasticity and strength to our hair and nails. The body’s natural collagen production can be affected by diet, stress and poor gut health and naturally declines with age.
Taking collagen powder or drinking bone broth can help boost your collagen intake which aids in increasing your skin’s elasticity, reducing fine lines, wrinkles and boosting hydration.
- Hydrate
Yep good old H2O is where it’s at.
Skip the energy and soft drinks and sip on water throughout the day. Your body is made up of 50-65% water. If you’re not hydrated, it will show in your skin first as it loses its elasticity. Increasing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.
Not keen on water, try adding some slices of fruit or fresh herbs like peppermint to give it some flavour. Herbal teas are also great and count towards your total daily water intake so find a good water bottle (preferably glass) and keep it on hand!
- Sleep
Sleep is like a reset button for your body. 7-8.5hrs of good quality sleep is recommended by experts as the optimum amount to wake up feeling refreshed and your body rejuvenated.
If you’re not getting enough or your sleep quality is poor, it will show in your skin. We’ve all noticed the dark circles under our eyes when we’ve had little sleep and hydration levels plummet so get some quality shut-eye to keep that healthy glow.
- Increase Fruit and Vegetable Intake
You’ve heard this before but fruits and vegetables are nature’s candy. They are high in vitamins, minerals and macronutrients vital for optimal cellular function. The skin is the last to receive these micronutrients so if your skin is looking a little lack lustre try bumping up your fruit and vegetable intake.
- Eat fish
Fish is high in omega 3 fatty acids vital for skin hydration and cellular function. Oily fish such as salmon, mackerel, sardines and anchovies are particularly good for reducing inflammation in the body and skin and providing protection against the sun.
Including fish regularly in your diet 2-3 times/week is a must.
- Eat Prebiotic and Probiotic Foods
Pre and probiotic foods help promote good gut health which is linked to heathy skin.
Pre-biotic foods such as oats, bananas, artichokes, garlic, bran and seaweed provide the food for probiotics to thrive. Probiotic foods such as yogurt, fermented vegetables and Kombucha help to keep gut bacteria in balance and promote a healthy digestive system which in turn promotes healthy skin.
- Exercise
Exercise helps to flush toxins from the body as we sweat leading to healthy, better looking skin.
We can build up toxins in the body by breathing them in, applying them to our skin and even eating them in some cases. To flush these toxins and chemical build-ups we need to sweat which is where exercise comes in.
Participating in at least 2-3 sessions of movement per week where you get a bit of a sweat up is beneficial for healthy-glowing skin.
- Reduce inflammatory foods
Eating fried or heavily processed foods can cause inflammation in the body which effects the appearance of your skin. By eliminating these foods and focusing on a more whole food, less processed diet you can reduce inflammation in the body and skin.
Try to focus on cooking at home, using minimal vegetable oils when cooking (vegetable oils when heated become carcinogenic). Include olive oil in your diet and use in your salad dressings.
- Reduce Stress
The body’s response to stress is to produce cortisol, a hormone that contributes to the production of more oil which can contribute to oily skin, causing break-outs and other skin conditions.
Stress causes skin to become more sensitive and reduces its healing abilities which can flare up conditions such as psoriasis and eczema and cause hives and other skin flare-ups.
We can’t avoid stress so learning good practices to deal with stress is ideal. Meditation, taking time out for yourself and good breathing techniques may help you to cope with the situation and reduce the effect of stress on your body and skin.
- Sauna Baby!
Like exercise, taking a sauna is a great way to sweat out the toxins that can build up in your body. It can also be relaxing, so a good way to reduce stress.
In Europe, saunas have been taken for centuries as they are believed to be linked to good health and vitality. Haven’t had a sauna? Try one, your skin will love you for it!
